The
main house was purchased from a logging company
back in 1938 by "Curley & "Thora" Couvelier here they both
stand in front of the steps leading to the front door. They raised two children
"Norma" & "Doug". both attended the old school building
built on a bluff behind the resort Curley worked as a logger, Sekiu was a very
busy area for logging, from the 1930's to the 1970's a locomotive use to bring
logs from the Hoko logging camp on a flat car right in front of the house across
the street, and back the flat cars out on a pier and then dump the log's in the
bay.
From a ship that went a ground by Sekiu point, Curley
salvaged much of the lumber and used it to
build a couple of cabins, for rentals long ago for logging crews, that's
basically how Curley's resort got started. As Sekiu grew as a great place to
catch Big Chinook Salmon, other resorts followed on Front street bringing
more and more fishermen.
The Motel first floor was build in 1954, it had eight units
that kept busy, and had all electric appliances as the sign said across the
front, 4 years later the second story
was added, this kept all four very busy. Soon
Curleys grew as word got out, then he got into the rental boat business , were he had
35 boats at one time to maintain, and rent to fishermen.
Busy Front Street and view of Sekiu 1961, Curley &
Thora had mentioned to the family Dentist that the resort was For Sale, which he
ended up buying.
