history

Curley and Thora Couvelier purchased what is now known as Curley’s in 1938 as their home. Like many Sekiu residents at the time, Curley worked as a local logger. Their children attended the school located on the hillside above the property.

In the 1940s, a ship ran aground near Sekiu Point. Curley salvaged lumber from the wreck and used it to build several cabins on the property, which were rented to logging crews working in the area.

As Sekiu gained recognition as a premier destination for big Chinook salmon fishing, more resorts began to appear along Front Street, attracting fishermen from near and far and helping shape the waterfront community visitors enjoy today.

The motel’s first floor was built in 1954 and featured eight units, which stayed consistently busy. All units were equipped with electric appliances, proudly advertised on the sign across the front of the building. Four years later, a second story was added, keeping the entire family hard at work as the business continued to grow.
